HEALTHY BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP Healthy Business Partnership The IW Chamber of Commerce, Tourism & Industry (IWCCTI) has always recognised the importance of a healthy workforce in ensuring the prosperity of businesses. A healthy and motivated workforce is fundamental to the success of any business, large or small, and it should be a priority of all businesses to take an interest in, and care for, the well-being of their employees. With this in mind the IWCCTI has linked up with the Islands NHS Primary Care Trust and the Islands County Council to promote employee health and well-being under the brand name of the Healthy Business Partnership (HBP). Ian Malcolm has been appointed as Healthy Business Partnership's Workplace Health Advisor to support businesses. Formerly the Chamber officer for Membership Services, Mr Malcolm is well placed to link in with the Island business community and assist with developing a healthier workforce. The Healthy Business Partnership will be developing a range of initiatives and opportunities to support employers, the first being help with the implementation and consequences, of the Smoke-Free legislation being introduced on the 1st of July 2007. The new Smoke-Free legislation will apply to almost all places of work, and public places, which are either wholly or substantially enclosed, giving almost all workers and members of the public the right to breathe Smoke-Free air. Vehicles used for work must also be Smoke-Free if there is any shared use. Non-compliance by employers, owners and managers will attract substantial fines. With the help of the NHS Primary Care Trust, consideration is being given to a ‘model’ Smoke Free policy that will be made available to businesses in due course. This legislation heralds the prospect of a healthier workforce with increased productivity, a cleaner corporate image, reduced insurance costs and reduced cleaning and maintenance costs. Part of the NHS Health Promotion Team, Island Quitters are now able to send a specialist Smoking Cessation Advisor into your workplace, to provide FREE, group Stop Smoking Sessions for groups of employees, offering a full course of nicotine replacement therapy for the price of a single prescription. A number of Island businesses have already taken advantage of this offer and there is no doubt that this initiative is proving very successful in helping a significant number of employees quit.
