The Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce is joining Chambers across the UK in calling for measures that help businesses invest, recruit and grow when the Chancellor delivers the Budget on Wednesday 28 October.
The British Chambers of Commerce’s “Back Business, Cut Costs and Deliver Growth” campaign is urging the Government to ease the costs facing firms. Its three immediate requests are a reduction in employer National Insurance contributions for under-25s, targeted relief on energy bills and business rates, and consistent, locally delivered support for SMEs seeking to export.
Those decisions matter on the Isle of Wight. Higher operating costs can leave businesses with less room to take on staff, develop skills or invest in their next stage of growth. The Chamber wants the Budget to give Island firms greater confidence to make those commitments.
National Chamber research underlines the pressure: the BCC says domestic policy-driven costs for a typical SME have risen by more than 70% over the past decade, while only 17% of firms in its latest survey plan to increase investment. These are UK-wide findings, not Island-specific figures.
Chamber leaders brought the message to Westminster earlier this month. The Isle of Wight Chamber will review the measures announced on Wednesday and share what they mean in practice for Island businesses.
