Views on the first phase of a £9 million project to improve traffic congestion in Newport are being sought by the Island’s council.

The initial stage is designed to reduce delays near St Mary’s roundabout – with further phases being investigated for other traffic bottlenecks in the town, including Coppins Bridge.

Traffic flow data has been gathered to help experts identify issues elsewhere in the town and find solutions which are in line with the council’s regeneration plans and take into consideration any future traffic increase.

For the St Mary’s scheme, new junctions at Hunnyhill and Forest Road, and traffic lights on St Mary’s roundabout are planned to improve access to Medina Way. The altered road layout would help to reduce bus journey times between Cowes and Newport, reduce traffic delays and create a new cycle link to the hospital, from Hunnyhill.

A new signalised pedestrian crossing is proposed for Hunnyhill.

“I understand how frustrating it is to be stuck in traffic in Newport and this money will do a great deal to help,” said Councillor Ian Ward, Cabinet member for infrastructure and transport.

“A long-term solution to the town’s many traffic issues has been long overdue and we are determined and committed to finding the right way forward.

“This is the first of a series of traffic schemes which are planned for the town and I would urge people to have their say on the proposed changes.”

Details of the St Mary’s junction scheme and information on how to have your say can be found on the council’s website from 3pm on Tuesday 23 January 2018 here:
