A new map has been unveiled in Newport town centre, designed by a local artist, reflecting the history of the Island’s capital town through the ages.

“We’ve been working on this project for about four years,” explains Julie Jones Evans, chairman of Newport and Carisbrooke Parish Council. “We received seed funding from the Isle of Wight Lottery. We’re very proud that the map has been made in enamel by AJ Wells and hand drawn by Alan Rowe. It’s a real snapshot in time, showing the similarities between today’s town layout and the mediaeval era. It’s for visitors and local people alike. I hope people will enjoy it and connect with it. It’s something more than an a-to-z, instilling a sense of place as well as directing people to some of the secondary and tertiary shopping areas.”
